Artist Statement

I modeled and 3D printed a robot-like teddy bear in significance of Teddy from the sci-fi film A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), directed by Steven Spielberg. In context, Teddy is a plushie bear-like robot that is designed to be a companion to the protagonist David, a highly advanced child robot. Teddy is a loyal friend and protector to David throughout his journey to find the “Blue Fairy” and become a real boy. Teddy is programmed to express qualities of affection, empathy, and companionship in a way that is endearing and comforting to David. Despite being a machine, Teddy exhibits human-like qualities of selflessness and emotional support, becoming David’s closest friend and confidant. Teddy is not only a memorable character in the movie, but also a symbol of adoration, innocence, and the blurred line between humans and machines.

• Transferred model to a Cura slicer program for 3D printing design
• Printed model with supports and cleaned excess artifacts
• Painted print with metallic paint materials
